Repotting a monstera that was too big for me

May 12, 2024 · 1 min read

My monstera grew roots out of the drainage holes, and water ran straight through the pot. It was time to repot, even though the plant was almost as tall as me.

I chose a pot only one size larger, about 5 cm wider than the old one. A much bigger pot holds too much wet soil, and the roots can rot.

The mix was regular potting soil with orchid bark and perlite. Monstera roots like air, so a chunky mix works better than dense soil.

I watered the plant the day before. Moist roots slide out more easily. I also tied the leaves together loosely with soft string, so they did not break.

The aerial roots, the long brown roots that grow from the stem, can go into the new soil or stay outside. I put the lower ones in the soil and left the others.

After repotting, the plant stayed in the same spot and did not get fertilizer for a month. It started a new leaf after three weeks.
