Propagating pothos in water

April 18, 2021 · 1 min read

Pothos is the easiest plant I know to propagate. One long vine from my first plant has now become five plants for friends.

Cut a piece of vine with at least two or three leaves. Make the cut just below a node. A node is the small brown bump where a leaf joins the stem. The roots grow from the nodes, so a cutting without a node will not root.

Put the cutting in a glass of water. Keep the nodes under the water and the leaves above it. Put the glass in bright light, but not in direct sun.

Change the water once a week. After two or three weeks, small white roots appear. I move the cutting to soil when the roots are about 5 cm long.

The first week in soil is the difficult part. Water roots and soil roots are a little different, so keep the soil slightly moist until the plant shows new growth.
